I desired............................................................King Benjamin pleased with outcome

King Benjamin conducts an extensive public opinion poll to ascertain whether or not the public supports his religious manifesto.  The indicators support his hopes, and he prepares to step up the religious ceremony with a public covenant with God.  Some believe this process is similar to many done in the Middle East when royal leaders were in transition from father to son.

The people of King Benjamin are reminded of their relationship to Jesus Christ, of how we make choices that can seal us for ever to the Savior.  What we must recognize is that we do not make the rules, rather He does.  Those rules are clear, and we can gain direction to help us during our lives.

The atonement of Christ will cover the sins of the righteous through all time.  This makes it a universal.  And men must accept this role in order to be saved from their sins.  Also, the Lord will have a profound understanding of the severe trials of men because of his own life and experiences.

Mosiah 3: 14-20

like a child.............................................................children are acceptable before Christ.  We must earn the acceptability according to his commandments

Christ provides a law for men to live by in order for the atonement to take place.  He will send the Spirit to help men, but if they reject the Holy Ghost they will be unable to qualify for the full effects of the Atonement.  The laws given are to define the law, but the Lord understands the severity of the trial, so he allows for men to earn reconciliation, if they do as he requires.  Children under the age of accountability qualify automatically.

The great king Benjamin served his people, and he calls on all the others to do the same.  He reminds his people to work together as they keep the commandments.

king Benjamin waxes old..........................................King Benjamin prepares to leave the office
Mosiah proclaimed king.......................................a new king called and announced to the people
give a name........................................................a formal covenant making assembly
diligent............................................................a commitment to active work

Part of the passage of leadership from father to son requires the subjects of the land to commit themselves to keep the commandments of God and to follow the new leadership.  Benjamin sees a need for people to avoid nuances in religion and government by restudying the past and the written word.

Mosiah 1:  11-18

This illustrates the formal and ritual passage of national power from one administration to the next.

King Benjamin labors to make certain that all aspects of his personal duty are met in passing the power of his kingdom to his son, Mosiah.  He particularly centers on the message from the distant past to remind his country of the need for studying and teaching the original principles of notables of the past, particularly Nephi.

Brother Chemish acts the same way as Amaron.

Omni 1: 10-11

Ameleki records the migration away from the wicked Nephites.  He speaks of the leader, Mosiah, a righteous man who finds another group of Israelites, the offspring of a group that migrated to the promised land around the same time as Lehi, but were the children of King Zedekiah.

Omni 1: 20-30

large stone.................................................Mosiah a translator

stiffnecked leader.........................................not the best of leaders
considerable number....................................manages to raise a large group of migrants and tries again
about to die............................................the narrator must stop his record

Another writer follows the same model.  Ameleki writes a brief history, but at least he bridges to a better record.  The people are force to migrate, and they come into contact with other groups.  Th establishment of Zarahemla and its Nephite connection is discussed.

Omni

This book shows the failure of the Nephites to establish a permanent home due to their wickedness and their constant warfare.  Eventually they connect up with the Mulekites and form a stronger and more invigorating society at Zarahemla.  Now they are established under the leader, Mosiah and his son Benjamin.

scattered...........................................................a great deal of migrating, and also Lamaniteds
conflicts...............................................................a great deal of jockying for power
mighty men of God...............................................considers prosperity a blessing of God

This narrator conserves himself from writing much of a spiritual history, rather showing gratitude to God for the prosperity of his people, thanks to the righteous men among them.  Yet, he calls them a stiffnecked people.

Jarom 1: 9-15

prophets warn.....................................................the people are constantly warned of their sins
as if....................................................................teach Christ, as if he had already lived
kept them from.....................................................as yet, enough warning to save the people
go to other........................................................considers other records more interesting
unto Omni.............................................................continues the passage of the records

The other, darker side of the people is considered.  They are in constant need of repentance for their sins.  They are warned, and they have been preserved and prospered up to this point.

Jarom

A short book by a minor writer.  He seems to be writing grudgingly in the book, indicating next to no specifics about his people except that some are good and some are bad, and that they are living the law of Moses with a Messianic fervor.

Jacob

Jacob 7

Jacob 7: 1-5

Sherem..............................................................................a noteable anti-Christ
flattering..........................................................................the man appeals to the lowest in people
lead away..........................................................................Has a specific goal.  Pull people away
learned...........................................................................well educated and smart
knowledge of language........................................................a background in rhetoric, can misuse
not shaken...........................................................................Jacob's faith built on spiritual

The uprising of a contentious man serves as a severe test to the faith of the poeple of Nephi.

Jacob 7: 6-14

Law of Moses........................................................................Sherem attempts to pervert Christina teachings
confound him..............................................................unable to dissuade or shake
deny Christ?..................................................................you are not accepting Messiah at all?
power of Holy Ghost..........................................................a sure knowledge from God
show sign.........................................................................the LAST thing one asks for
tempt god?......................................................................lay a trap for the Lord himself
will deny............................................................................no intention of accepting a sign
nevertheless........................................................................Sherem may have his sign, by God's will

The argument descends to a contention calling for a sign.  But with the power of the Holy Ghost, Jacob knows that it is really a trap to harm the doctrine of Christ.  Once he asks for a sign, the matter is turned over to the Lord.  When one asks for a sign it is the ultimate evil sign, for an evil and adulterous nation asketh for a sign.  The curse is contingent upon the Lord's will.

Jacob 7: 15-22

fell to earth....................................................................Sherem taken suddenly weak and ill
gather, I die......................................................................Sherem knows he is about to die
he denies.......................................................................Sherem publicly acknowledges his sin
deceived...........................................................................the devil has power to lead men
unpardonable?.............................................................Sherem worries about his eternal life
I confess...............................................................................a form of plea for forgiveness?
they fell............................................................................the people who had listened fall ill
I had requested...................................................................Jacob had prayed for this, and it is done

Sherem's battle is no longer with Jacob at all, but with the Lord himself.  And he falls almost immediately.  He does apologize publicly, and it is according to the prayer of Jacob.

Jacob 7: 23-27

peace restored.....................................................................the people return to the faith
Lamanites...................................................................despite attempts to change, continual fight
fortify..........................................................................Nephites must defend and protect
Jacob ages......................................................................reaches terminal state.  Will die.
plates............................................................................Jacob transfers plates to Enos

The peace restored.  Jacob continues the passage of the record to Enos.

Jacob 7

This cautionary tale illustrates the trouble that can arise with the emergence of a devious man who has persuasive abilities.  Sherem has threatened the whole spiritual base of the people.  After a confrontation with the people and their spiritual leader, Jacob, he is cursed by the Lord himself.  He is exposed as a fraud and as a liar.  Sherem dies, and the people return to the faith.  The warning goes out to future leaders, the perpetrator, and the people to follow the Holy Ghost.

the servants....................................................................great blessings
others.............................................................................destroyed as if by fire
remembers roots and branches.............................................both the apparent and the less so
repent.............................................................................the underlying message to the House

The prophecy set forth in the parable is a true message to the House of Israel to change its way in order to be found among the servants of the Lord, and not among the one destroyed in the fires.

Jacob 6: 6-12

harden not.....................................................................seek the spirit
nourished for good............................................................the Lord has given constant messages
rejection of word.............................................................shuts off the salvation of the Lord
stand with shame................................................................accountability before God
justice............................................................................if we break the law we are cursed
narrow way................................................................a specific method that must be met
wise..............................................................................we must exercise spiritual wisdom

God reminds us that salvation is a human choice.  The offer is there, the method is specific, and men are accountable for what they do with their free agency.

Jacob 6: 13

farewell..............................................................seen as his last set of entries

Jacob 6 is a strong message to anyone who comes into connection with the gospel.  Once we do this we become accounable before Gdo how we invite or reject the spirit of God into our lives.  it can either bless us and bring out the gifts of salvation, or it can lead to personal destruction through our rejection.  We will all answer for it.

The story begins with a need for Israel's scattering.  The fruitful shoots are taken outside the area to invigorate itself and promote growth elsewhere, and some are brought back in.

Jacob 5: 15-25

tree good fruit.............................................................the grafted branches are doing well
much fruit.....................................................................very productive decision
go...........................................................................check the various experiments
much fruit..................................................................many of the others fruitful and good
poorest spot...............................................................some of the worst places have best fruit
counsel me not.............................................................the owner doesn't humor the servant
gather it........................................................................the idea worked

The Lord of the orchard understands his olive tree better than the servant, and he reminds him that he doesn't take counsel from the servant.  To a large degree the grafting and scattering works very well in producing good fruit.

Jacob 5:  26-35

pluck off......................................................................with the mixtures there are bad branches

all sorts of fruit.......................................................the Lord and servant see every imaginable fruit
none good.................................................................the system is now a complete loss
done all........................................................................all acceptable means have been employeed

For a considerable time the system works very well, producing good fruit.  Eventually the wild fruit begins to reemerge, and the whole system is in failure mode.

Jacob 5: 36-50

Due to the fallen state of the orchard, the inventory leads the owner to say lets tear it all down.  the production has completely stopped.  The servants pleads for another attempt

Jacob 5: 51-64

The owner now intends to do a great gathering.  He expects that the system will produce the very best fruit of all, but it will not last forever.  He will need to vacate the whole system

Jacob 5: 65-72

pruning will take place.....................................as things become more apparent, destroy the worst
ye shall have joy................................................the servant promised a part with the fruit

A plan of gathering and pruning is employed.  All the plan is done exactly according to the plan.

Jacob 5: 72-77

This will continue until the lord calls time.  Then the whole thing will be assessed

The final stages of the garden.  Eventually the only thing that will be allowed to remain is the good. All other types of trees and fruits will be destroyed.

Jacob 5

Olive tree.

A long parable that parallels the history of God and his covenant peopl on the earth.  He illustrates the long time periods that are needed to grow a successful garden and developing a reasonable harvest from it.  The interesting question in it is "Who" has done the corruption in it.  Surely He and his servants have done everything correctly.  The wildness comes in.  The servants obey, but the branches and trees do not.  The owner and servants have a very emotional attachment to the garden.

Researchers say that this parable is very accurate and very instructive about real olive orchards.

Fascinating read.

command in Christ's name.............................................what happens when we show faith
grace and condescensions.........................He shows mercy, and he does visit the earth
revelations from him........................................................the only way to gain a testimony

Jacob makes plain why he is writing on the plates, and he makes clear that he attributes the power of prophecy with the Savior and his testimony and faith in the Savior.

Jacob 4: 9-13

we are not alone..................................................all true prophets give testimony of Christ

We need to know Christ's position in the universe.  We must never get things backwards, thinking we control Christ.  We are His children, not His master.

Jacob 4: 14-17

Jews......................................................................a fallen people who destroy the believers

I will unfold...........................................................Jacob gives the next chapter in the Spirit of revelation

The Jewish people have tinkered so much with the Word of God, that they destroy the true believers, and they will actually miss the Savior when he comes.

Jacob 4

This chapter is to let us understand better the importance of revelation, and the relationship we have with the Savior, if we would gain a testimony and serve Him.  We must never think it is about magic or controlling the Savior.  He is the king, and we take the counsels from Him  If we get that right, He will teach us, and there is nothing that can deter us at that point.

Jacob 3

Jacob 3

Jacob 3:1-5

pure in heart...................................................pleasing word of God recipients
console.......................................................receive the comfort of the Lord
firm minds.......................................................determined to remain true and faithful in all things
wo................................................................promised punishment when not pure in heart
scourge.........................................................a constant continuing curse laid out
lead away righteous........................................the good constantly seek holy places
filthiness.........................................................refusal to become clean, a curse leading to skin
skin....................................................................an obvious marker that is visual
commandment.......................................................only one wife and no concubines

Jacob has a 2 sided message, one of promise to the faithfulness, and one of warning for those who have hardened their hearts.  He also explains that the appearance of the Lamanites has occurred because of the Lamanite refusal to follow the Spirit of God.  The same curse could come to the disobedient Nephite.

Jacob 3: 6-11

observance........................................................Lamanites have only one wife,  to be spared
love.................................................................Lamanites are true to their families
unbelief..............................................................not attributed to them, but their fathers

revile..............................................................no reason to gloat over Lamanites.  They are under God's care
remember own filthiness...............................concentrate on personal wickedness, not others'
children...........................................................duty to build up the next generation faithfully

Too often people make an assumption that with the acceptance of the gospel somehow a person is better than his neighbors; however, this is not true.  The advantage is for knowing and keeping the commandments, not for an advantage over others who are lost.  The Lord will take care of those who are not of the covenant in His own time and way, but those who have the gospel should concentrate on personal righteousness and the righteous rearing of their children.

Jacob 3: 12-14

Restatement of the gross iniquities.

Jacob 3

Jacob warns the impure of the tenuous position that they incur on themselves and their children.  he warns that the righteous will not remain with the evil, and that their might come another migration caused by their disobedience and wicked behavior.  This is also a comfort to the righteous who must suffer because of this disobedience.

sin beginneth..............................................................although new and correctable
shrink with shame........................................................feels troubled lest he be held accountable

Jacob highly disturbed by a new trend that has begun among his people after the death of Nephi.  He sets the example that we must never seem to accept bad behavior through silence.  To magnify a calling, one must speak up.  Otherwise we will be held accountable for not exercising our priesthood and our calling.

Jacob 2: 7-11

Reminder is given that we should not follow money, but rather we should dedicate ourselves to lifting and helping others.  We need to keep wealth in its proper place

Jacob 2: 20-22

persecute.................................................................there are those who misuse wealth to hurt
equality..................................................................God does not judge men by their wealth
grosser crime.............................................................materialism is bad.  Something is worse

Men start to think that wealth somehow shows a deeper commitment to God; however, this is simply false.  It can actually destroy people.  As bad as it is, their are worse things.

Jacob 2: 23-33

only the Lord...........................................................polygamy only under direction.
sorrow and mourning...........................................destructive to women.  Makes men wicked
not suffer...............................................................He will overrule the polygamy
saith the Lord........................................................given the prophet's direct statement

Jacob approaches the whoredom associated with rise of polygamy among the Nephites.  he expressly tells them to stop it immediately under he penalty of severe curses from God

Jacob 2: 34-35

from father Lehi.................................................they have changed the rules, not Lehi who led them
greater iniquities................................................even the Lamanites are more righteous to families
sobbings.........................................................a result of women's prayers.  God has heard it.
deep wounds....................................................the Lord sees the hurt caused to the women.

These cultural developments did not come through the leadership.  It is condemned and it is not allowed.  any argument using David as the model will be thrown down.  God has spoken.

Jacob 2

This chapter demonstrates the way a prophet of God will stand up against the evils and errors of his times.  God will not allow his righteous followers to be hurt by members of His church.  He will warn them and will spell out the curse that is about to be poured out if his is ignored.  In this case, Jacob condemns materialism that leads away from God, but he forbids polygamy when it does not come directly from Him.

There is a need for both a careful secular history and a primarily religious and spiritual record.  The small plates have as a purpose the welfare of the people in accepting and working in faith.

magnify office.................................................the servants of God are diligent in service

Jacob is the prophet.  He sets up the Church firmly, insisting that the gospel of Christ is taught, and he reminds men to follow the gospel.

This chapter quickly moves through Nephi's latter years to the illustrate how with time, the level of faith within the community lessens.  Part of this occurs simultaneously with the establishment of a government with a monarch at the head.  He speaks of the sins of David, especially of plural marriage and of the concubines held by the new kings.  He diligently establishes a strong religious organization and teaches the leaders to be teachers and to counteract the growing wickedness.

The Lord wants us to ask what to do.  Failure to ask is what limits men, and it is a primary symptom of unbelief and inability to believe.

Nephi recounts that the entry into the Kingdom of God commences with baptism, first by fire, and then by the baptism of fire when the Holy Ghost becomes his gift to guide him.  Then a man need only endure to the end.  Then salvation and eternal life are bestowed upon him.

Gentiles repent..........................................................promise of salvation
carry forth..................................................................Book of Mormon will save many Gentiles

Gentiles are in a peculiar position concerning the success of bringing forth the Kingdom of God.  It will be a mixed blessing and curse, because the Gentiles will work actively in the establishment of the latter-day kingdom, but the behavior of many in their society will require considerable changes and much repentance in order to come into compliance with the Lord's covenant.

2 Nephi 30: 6-12

When the Lord's time arrives, great revelations will become widespread. (Internet) When this occurs, people will have a much easier way to make choices either to accept His word, or to reject it all.

2 Nephi 30

This message to the House of Israel lets would-be righteous people know that mere membership
in the kingdom does not guarantee salvation.  It depends on making the voluntary choice to accept his law and keep the covenant (both), or to fall short.

In the last days, the word will go forth despite the conflict with the older orders that would limit the access men have with divine revelation.  We can expect it, and we should embrace it.

2 Nephi 29

This book establishes a major doctrine of personal and group revelation that will super-cede all the limiting philosophies that men will have imposed on the people, through misrepresentations of the Bible and by their uttered opinions concerning personal revelation.  God wants us to know that he wants us to get spirituality individually and by his help, when we have faith.

In the last days, an examination of the conditions of the leadership of many Christian faiths will reveal a tremendous amount of denial about the truths taught by the Spirit of the Holy Ghost.  The result is a doctrine that does not allow men to receive direct revelation from the Lord.

2 Nephi 28: 10-14

precepts of men...........................................................no righteous origin for such doctrine

Revelation about the sects of Christianity that claim divine acceptance has an underlying sin.  Such groups are founded and run by the proud, and they do not represent the Will of God.  They prey on the righteous and do nothing to strengthen faith and harmony.  They are worldly constructs.  They are guilt of nullifying the works and lives of the Saints.

These people who join and make up these evil systems will have an opportunity to repent and turn to God.  That will be provided in the last days to give these people and avenue to get into the right ways.  However, an angry Satan will actively work to ensnare them, and to make them fall.  He will flatter, trick, pacify, and ensnare them.  If they fail to change when taught by God, they will be judged by the Lord.

A message to the Gentiles.  Those who live in those days are reminded to follow the Lord, and to believe the words of the Book.  The gospel does not limit people, and those who are taught can believe in a real and active God.

2 Nephi 28

This chapter was written for men in the last days.  It is descriptive of the conditions of the larger Christian world and reveals to those who will look, that many of the teachings of the pastors and teachers are worldly and have no scriptural backing.  They actually limit people and place them under the influence of the devil.  The one thing to focus on most of all is personal revelation of the Lord through the Holy Ghost.  If men will trust that one thing alone, the Lord will lead them to do what he wants, cutting through the obstacles that men place in the spiritual paths.  Ultimately, all men are responsible to repent, so any teaching that diverges from that principle will amount to denying the Holy Ghost.

spirit of sleep............................................................the people are out of touch with reality. To fail

If one tries to find logic in the behaviors of nations of the Gentiles, one will be hard pressed.  The wickedness and evil that underlies the nations' acts will seem totally absurd, like a drunken man.  Those things that are against the righteous desires of the Lord will be destroyed, even if it means the loss of whole nations.

Due to the over-reliance of men to ideas in the European cultures, the Lord intends to establish the Book of Mormon, and His gospel, in a much more spiritual manner.  Those who would tamper with His methods will be exposed as aiding to establish and promote evil and wicked systems; whereas, His methods will be divine and remain protected for the purpose of publishing to the world, and more importantly, to save people.

2 Nephi 26

The Lord reveals to Nephi how the Nephites and Lamanites would become adversarial and destroy much of what was good.  The people would fall into apostasy.  Eventually another troubled people, the Gentiles, would come and severely harm those left in America.  Then will come the gospel of the Lord to show mercy and invite men to come to him and to get away from the evil.
