Part of the passage of leadership from father to son requires the subjects of the land to commit themselves to keep the commandments of God and to follow the new leadership. Benjamin sees a need for people to avoid nuances in religion and government by restudying the past and the written word.

This illustrates the formal and ritual passage of national power from one administration to the next.
King Benjamin labors to make certain that all aspects of his personal duty are met in passing the power of his kingdom to his son, Mosiah. He particularly centers on the message from the distant past to remind his country of the need for studying and teaching the original principles of notables of the past, particularly Nephi.

Jarom 1: 1-8

hardness of hearts.....................................................people very determined to be irreligious
many have revelations...........................................although not recorded, many are believers
profaned not........................................................the main culture follows the law of Moses
scattered...........................................................a great deal of migrating, and also Lamaniteds
conflicts...............................................................a great deal of jockying for power
mighty men of God...............................................considers prosperity a blessing of God
This narrator conserves himself from writing much of a spiritual history, rather showing gratitude to God for the prosperity of his people, thanks to the righteous men among them. Yet, he calls them a stiffnecked people.

prophets warn.....................................................the people are constantly warned of their sins
as if....................................................................teach Christ, as if he had already lived
kept them from.....................................................as yet, enough warning to save the people
go to other........................................................considers other records more interesting

There is a need for both a careful secular history and a primarily religious and spiritual record. The small plates have as a purpose the welfare of the people in accepting and working in faith.

Jacob is the prophet. He sets up the Church firmly, insisting that the gospel of Christ is taught, and he reminds men to follow the gospel.
This chapter quickly moves through Nephi's latter years to the illustrate how with time, the level of faith within the community lessens. Part of this occurs simultaneously with the establishment of a government with a monarch at the head. He speaks of the sins of David, especially of plural marriage and of the concubines held by the new kings. He diligently establishes a strong religious organization and teaches the leaders to be teachers and to counteract the growing wickedness.

2 Nephi 29: 1-2
will be many...................................................................a day with an enormous population
marvelous work and wonder...............................................terms referring to missionary work
second time..............................................................Lord will perform his second coming
promises....................................................................Lord told ancients he would do this, and he does it
hiss forth....................................................................the message will be heard
ends of earth....................................................................the origin of the world from an unexpected place (West)
standard......................................................................spells forth the Lord's law
The messages of the gospel will be renewed in the future. the origin of the message will come from the ends of the earth, but they will be clearly heard.
2 Nephi 29: 3-12

Bible problems..........................................................good book, but it is limited itself
mouth of Jew...........................................................forget who wrote the book, the culture lost
Gentiles.........................................................................forge who the book featured, breaking the promises

God wants us to study all scriptures, and to get a testimony of it from Him. He will establish His word, and he will do it many cultures. So we need to look towards his Will, not that of scholars and men.

In the last days, the word will go forth despite the conflict with the older orders that would limit the access men have with divine revelation. We can expect it, and we should embrace it.

This book establishes a major doctrine of personal and group revelation that will super-cede all the limiting philosophies that men will have imposed on the people, through misrepresentations of the Bible and by their uttered opinions concerning personal revelation. God wants us to know that he wants us to get spirituality individually and by his help, when we have faith.

2 Nephi 5: 1-7
anger....................................................the anger of the brothers grows to a killing level
afflicted by words.......................................Offended? Afflicted? distorted thinking
flee.......................................................commanded to separate and to take adherents with him
leaves................................................takes Zoram, Joseph, Jacob, Sam
many days..............................................they make the distance quite considerable
Due to the anger of the older brothers, it becomes necessary for Nephi and those who follow him to leave. They pack up quickly and move several days away.
2 Nephi 5: 8-13

prosper............................................................the group works together well and prospers
brought with................................................sacred objects. The record and the Liahona
The people of Nephi approach the separation very seriously and they do very well.
2 Nephi 5: 14-20

industrious................................................a productive people. Good economy

After the separation some kind of genetic mutation occurred, making the Lamanites different than the Nephites. The new ethnic group falls.

Time moves. Nephi ages. The group prospers, but eventually comes into contact with the Lamanites, and skirmishes begin
This chapter sees the division of Lehi's family into two groups. The Lamanites become a loathsome people, while the Nephites prosper.
